Leather of fabric furniture???

burunx Sep 05, 2006 11:03 AM

Hello,

I have a kitty who will some times go potty on the couch (both urination and defication) and all medical, social, emotional issues have been resolved, so I have to live with it. Question is...is a fabric couch or leather couch better for clean up? I can take the cover off of the pillows and wash it and stick the whole big pillow in the shower to rinsh it off. Will a leather couch with leather protector on it clean easily?

Thanks!!

Bless you for keeping this problem kitty. My initial reaction is to pick out a couch you really like and then cover it with plastic sheeting and towels to protect it, then whip off the covers when company is due!

Probably leather would be better for cleaning, although smells and stains could get into it permanently. Which are you more comfortable with - cleaning the covers or cleaning the leather?

I keep my pets for life! This boy that does the 'bad things' is 16 years old and is a COMPLETE mommy's boy. I have never met another kitty who is so devoted.

Have you tried using the litters that "attract" cats to a litter box? Usually they are used for kittens or to re-train cats. I've seen them in petstores (like PetsMart). The one that comes to mind is "Cat Attract" or something like that. Maybe if he has a strong attraction to the litter, he'll use your couch less. Just a thought as it sounds like you've covered all the other avenues.

Thanks Tammy! That is one thing I had not thought of. I will give it a try!!

I don't know how expensive it is. Because you may have to use it long-term, you may want to try full-strength at first and if it works, after a couple weeks to a month, mix it with regular litter if it is very expensive... Even if you mix, you'd want more of that than regular, I'd think, to affect him. Full strength would be best, if it isn't too expensive.

Something else to try is a thicker plastic (than dry cleaning bags) from a hardware/Lowe's/Home Depot store and cover your furniture like a slip cover. Not long-term, but it will stop him temporarily from using your couch. Maybe do it in conjunction with the Cat Attract to get him used to using the box with a litter he really likes and his favorite spot blocked with plastic...
