Possibly food related

tammymc37 Aug 21, 2007 04:29 PM

My 6 year old male cat suddenly has begun pooping in many strange places. I recently switched food to a natureal brand Life's Abundance cat food because one of my two cats was diagnosed with food alergies (this food has helped the alergies iwth the one cat and caused litter box problems with the other). Ever since switching my male cat now seems afraid to poop. He suddenly jumps up...runs around as though he's scared of something and then either poops on the run or finds a nearby rug and goes on it. I don't know if this new food has caused constipation or pain of some sort...but I'm worried.

Hi Tammy,

I think that a vet visit would be a good idea. If you can, bring a stool sample with you. I doubt that parasites are the problem, but you never know and it might be helpful for the vet to see what the consistancy of the stool is. If it's very hard, constipation may be the cause of your cat's behavior.

I suppose this can be food related, so maybe you can bring a can of the food with you, or a bag if it is dry. Or at least write down the ingredients to take with you.

If your cat is very nervous, perhaps something really spooked him while he was in the litterbox so he is avoiding it. In this case, antianxiety medication might be helpful on a temporary basis.

Please take your kitty in and let us know what happens.

Regards,
PHKitkat
