Poop on the cat's bed?

jmbrown Jun 10, 2003 11:23 AM

I have two cats who are litter mates and until recently have had no problems at all. Like I said, until recently. As of about 3 weeks ago one of the cats has been pooping on one of their beds. In one bedroom of the house they have 2 beds and their crate. Only one of the beds has been pooped on and I can't figure out why? Could it be a territory issue. I've never had a problem with it before. Their litter box is cleaned every morning and even though there is two they've always used one box. I hope you all can help. You can email me at jmbrown@coxnews.com
Thanks

At this point I'd recommend a vet check to be sure there is no underlying medical reason for this problem. You may need to confine one cat to a small room for a bit to determine who is pooping or you can just take both cats in.

If there is no medical reason, then the problem is behavioral. There is no telling why this is going on - could be territorial. The cats may have seen another cat outside or something.

To retrain the cat to the box confine him/her to a small room with just the box, bedding and food. Usually they will re-learn. Then you can gradually expand their territory. Meanwhile you'll need to thoroughly deodorize the bed with an enzyme cleaner such as Nature's Miracle.

Feliway might help in this case after the bed has ben deodorized. Although primarily for urine marking, it can help with fecal marking too. Just spritz a bit on the bed, every other day or so and then gradually stop using it.
