My Cat is acting strange

Tazorre Jun 14, 2003 11:39 AM

My cat is 3 years old pure white and deaf since birth. He has been nuetered. Has all his shots. Eats well. I went to bed 3 nights ago my cat was fine. When I awoke at 4 a.m. For work the cat was just sitting and staring. I walked to him and he just looked at me usually he is all happy and meets me to go and eat but he just sat and stared. He walks very slowly as if he is scared and looking to see what is there before he proceeds. He has always been kind of skittish because he can't hear but never like this. He still eats but he doesnt have the enthusiasm he once had for his food. We have an old cat 12 years old who is still the same. does anyone no why he does this. Thanks

First, thank you so much for taking in this special cat! My immediate reaction is that something really spooked the poor thing and now he's watching out for it. Were there any marks on him anyplace or did you find anything out of place in your home? However, there could be something physically wrong if he moves differently, too. Is his slow movement just caution or perhaps because he aches somewhere? Does he still respond to your touch the same? If it continues, I'd probably take him to the vet to be checked. Sorry not to be of more help but am sure some of the more knowledgable around here will reply. Katc

No he had no marks on him and nothing was out of place. He still will sit with me and let me brush him and pet him but he just acts weird when he is walking around the house. Thank you for answering.

This cat needs a vet check ASAP just to be sure there is no underlying medical cause for this new behavior. Even if you don't see a mark on him, though it could be that something spooked him suddenly. Maybe he saw another cat unexpectedly outside. But since he is off his food a bit too, he should be examined.

Good luck. Let us know what the vet says!

This is probably totally off the wall, but there are different degrees of deafness. The first thing that popped into my mind when I read this was, maybe for the first time he heard a sound . That sure would spook him and also have him looking around trying to figure out what it was. Yeah I know, probably far fetched.. I would have him vet checked....Shorty

Well I have never known him to hear anything at all but I suppose it could be. Vet trips are very tramatic for him also. He will hide for days afterwards and run away from me for weeks but if I have to I will. He doesn't like anyone but me he has always been that way. Strange tho my husband told me that he had to pick him up and bring him in from the front hall. He has never allowed anyone to touch him but me so I was very surprised. Also now that I am home this weekend more than week days. I have noticed that he is afraid of black things. I have a rubber mat in front of the door and he hits it and he will not walk on it he jumps over it. Also he attacked the vaccum cleaner cord so strange. I went over to him and hugged him after and pet him he seemd fine but he just walks around and watches constant. I will make an appointment for monday for him to see the vet. Thanks to all who answered.

I agree that a vet check first off is the way to go to rule out any possible medical problems. His lack of appitite is of great concern. Be sure to tell the vet everything you can think of even if it seems unimportant or unrelated.

We have one cat that is just as spooky as you can imagine. She too walks slowly and cautiously. Any little noise will send her streaking for cover. While your cat can't hear anything it can feel vibrations through it's feet. Maybe something heavy fell onto the floor and your baby got scared because of the sudden vibration. Being deaf the other senses have become more acute to compensate so he is much more sensitive to things like this.

I don't have any experience with deaf cats, but my first instinct with any behavioral change is to take the cat to the vet for a check-up. I know it is stressful for your cat to go to the vet and that might make matters worse, but he should be seen. Maybe the vet would make a housecall if you asked?
Otherwise it sounds as if something might have spooked him. Let us know what happens.
