Mommy cat acting strange

Himmygirl0928 Jul 09, 2003 01:14 PM

My Himmy Sassy just had her first litter. I have another cat that I breed Daisy and never have had any problems with her. Sassy had her kittens about 9 days ago and did have some problems she had a uterus infection that has been treated and seems to be gone. However she is extremely nervous about us (my husband and I) touching her kits. None of my cats are caged they are allowed to roam freely. Sassy and her kits are in the bathroom. Every time I open the door she flies past me with a kit in her mouth trying to hide it somewhere. Also, she keeps taking the kits out of the nursing box. Like I said before I never experienced this with my other cat and was just wondering if anyone knew why she is acting like this.

Thank you

Well, I certainly don't breed, so I have no advice in that regard, but, from a strictly behavioral standpoint it sounds like the whole ordeal, whether the birth or the infection or both together has upset her. And you know how cats get when they decide there is something to be nervous about, there's little hope of convincing them otherwise. One track minds....

Hi,
I don't have any experience with mothers and kittens of my own, but it sounds like Sassy is not comfortable with her kittens in the bathroom. She obviously feels this is not a safe place for them and that's why she keeps trying to run out to hide them. Is there another room you can keep her and the kittens in, maybe one with a closet where she might stash the kits to feel more secure? Like I said, I habe no experience breeding, but have noticed this type of behavior with some rescued momcats and kittens. Once they had the kits hidden in an area they felt safe in, they usually calmed right down.

I also have never had breeding cats. But I found a mommy with her two kittens in our garage. She was really scared. I put her along with the kittens in a crate and put them in our back bedroom. I had her out in the open room but she didn't like that. So she moved them into a closet. I have heard of a lot of mommy cats that keep their babies in a closet. Maybe you could put her in a bedroom with a closet and she will calm down. Is the bathroom used a lot? She might not like all of the traffic coming in and out all of the time.
