Howling while eating

hisgirl93 Jul 15, 2003 08:40 PM

The other night my five week old male kitten did the strangest thing. We were letting him wander around the living room and he discovered our older cat's food dish filled with dry food. He just started getting weaned about a week ago and has been eating canned food or softened dry food. Well he started crying when he smelled it (he always cries when he's hungry or bored or whatever) and started trying to eat it. He then started crying and eating at the same time. It's hard to explain but went something like this: "Meooow, chomp chomp, swallow, meoooww, chomp chomp, gag, hack, meooooww, swallow, chomp chomp, meeowww"
He was actually crying with his mouth full too it was soo funny but a little weird. It went on like this for 10 minutes, we just let him since he seemed to be eating it ok and it was dry food for kittens anyhow. Anyone know what was up with that?

Sounds to me like he thought he found heaven.

Seriously, when cats find something they think is just "da bomb" many will often make noise, howling or growling over it. They want to make sure no one else comes to take their treasure away.

Obviously he is a severely deprived kitten if he thinks plain old adult dry food is something to go nuts over. I'm sure his life is very bleak and devoid of all joy, right?

I think your kitten really really liked that food! LOL.

Sounds like he was so happy he couldn't help but to burst into song!
There are a couple of theories why kittens do this. One is that they're literally overcome with joy and just have to tell the world how thrilled they are. Another is that they're sending a message to other cats such as, "Hey, this is MY food. Don't even think of trying to share this."
Whatever your kitten's motivation, singing for his supper is adorable. Grab a video camera and try to catch this one on film if you can, because most kittens grow out of it fairly quickly.
