Question about a cats estrus cycle

50ftQueenie Aug 12, 2003 04:48 AM

We've only had our cat for about 2 months, and this is the second estrus cycle we've had to deal with. With her last one there were no problems. She just laid around meowing, and rubbing all over everything. This time, since she went into her cycle, she's been pooping on the floors CONSTANTLY. I know that a cat will urinate out of her litter box, to lay her scent down... but does she poop out of her box too?

I'm guessing it is, since we clean her litter box at least twice a week. Also, she's never pooped on the floors before this.

If she's a young cat/kitten, she is probably a bit confused by being in heat. Yes, they will spray, pee and poop inappropriately at times. She will continue to come in to heat about every two or three weeks with increasing intensity until she's bred or spayed, until the weather gets much, much cooler. Unless you are planning to use her in a breeding program, you will both be happier if you make an appointment now to have her spayed.

Is is, in fact, a very young cat. Probably only around a year old, so I can only imagine having to deal with her as her estrus gets worse. We've are planning on having her spayed ASAP, we just have to get the money to get it done. We should have her spayed by the end of fall.

Thank for the information. I'll keep in mind that she's just pooping because she's in heat. I hate having to lock her in the bathroom. I feel like a mean mommy for doing that to her.

Check around at various animal shelters and other rescue organizations for low cost spay services. Or see if you can pursaude your vet to spay her now and then pay back gradually in payments you can handle on a weekly basis. You might get lucky and you will have a much happier cat!

Call around to your local animal shelters and humane associations. They may be able to help you with low cost spaying for your cat. You can also call 1-800-spayusa for some local vets that offer low cost spaying. The sooner you get it done, the better off you and the cat will be. I hate to think of her locked in the bathroom until the fall.
