All of a sudden...one cat HATES the other....

PhunkyJess2k3 Aug 31, 2003 11:48 PM

My fiance and I have 2 cats that have been living together for 2 years now, since one was a kitten. This weekend, the older cat had to go away for a few days b/c he had some surgery done. This was the first time that they have been seperated in that type of situation. Now today, Bubba came home from being at the Vet for 3 days and as soon as he came into the house, the other cat started growling and hissing at him and she has NEVER acted like that before. All day, she's been strange, running from him and all around acting scared. When we try to pet her, she hisses and growls at us! This is far from her normal behavior and I've never seen anything like it. What can I do to fix this? Has anyone ever heard of something like this? I need help, this is very abnormal and just baffles my mind that this sweet lil cat is all of a sudden acting this way toward Bubba and US! Please help me!

Most likely the cat is reacting to the smell left from the vet visit.

Separate them and do the old towel trick - rub one then the other to exchange scents. Get a Comfort Zone plug in. Sometimes bathing both cats will help. One person even suggested the "tuna juice solution". You put some tuna juice on both cats and let them lick each other off. I would wait a few days while the cats were separated before trying that however!

This is a VERY common problem. One cat can smell "vet stink" on the other and becomes very upset.

In my house, this problem is cured immediately when we bathe the cat who went to the vet. However, you mentioned surgery. If your cat has stiches and is not able to be bathed yet, don't do it. If it's ok to bathe him, I recommend starting with that first and if that doesn't solve the problem, try the techniques Madame Alto suggested such as sharing the cats' scents with a towel.

Keep in mind that you probably have the smell of the vet's office on you too, which is why you're getting hissed at as well. Try to give this hissing kitty lots of love and affection as soon as you get out of the shower and/or change clothes. This will serve as a reminder that you don't always "smell like vet" and are safe.

Try not to worry too much. This problem typically lasts only a few days.
