Cat bites nipple ?

nab219 Oct 01, 2003 09:16 PM

A friend tells me a true story of a spayed 1 year old cat who lies on her back and bites her one nipple. The owner continues to tell the tale that the cat then proceeds to masturbate with her paw. True tale although I have never witnessed it. The vet put the cat on an antibiotic and drew some blood for unknown testing. Does anyone have any input ?

This is strange because cats do not get sexual pleasure per se the way humans do - in fact mating for a female is quite painful.

The "masturbation" action your friend is describing might be an indication that there is a urinary infection and irritation in that area. There may be also some skin irritation around the nipple. I suspect she may have just stumbled on this behavior as a means of relieving some pain or stress and is continuing it for that reason.

The only other thought I have on this is that some ovarian tissue might be left after spaying - although usually a cat show signs of being in heat. Perhaps the maternal instinct is kicking in here and she is getting some good feelings about having her nipple stimulated. It is hard to tell.

Your friend has done the right thing by taking the cat to the vet. Any unusual behavior should be checked out just in case there is an underlying medical cause.

If you do ever find out why the cat is doing what it is doing, please come back and let us know.

All of the blood test were normal for the cat. she has been on the antibiotic but continues with the same behavior. I did a internet search on this odd topic and found 2 articles which claimed that masturbation can occur in male cats who are spayed and can become a obsessive-compulsive type of behavior requiring medication. My concern is that the owner will not have the time, money or patience for the cat. She thought of using a water gun to stop the behavior. I thought maybe a bitter apple spray or any form of diversion for the cat.

Bitter Apple and a spray are the best deterrents for this, however, the cat may have some deeper problems causing this behavior.

Have your friend get a full vet check-up first. Then if all is clear, perhaps the cat can have some medication untill it unlearns the bevavior.

Good luck. It is tough to be a friend and yet not be able to help out fully!
