meowing kitty...stranger than it sounds

octopusouphut Nov 05, 2003 04:55 PM

My kitty Gizmo has never been much of a talker. Actually, since I've had her (almost a year), the only time I've ever heard her meow is, well...never. The only time she makes any type of noise is a hiss back when I first got her and I tried to pick her up or pet her. Now, when I pet her, if it's really quiet in the room you can almost hear her purr. It's more like you can feel it than hear it. But here's the weird thing. I got up this morning and Gizmo's staring at me and she just starts meowing and meowing. Real quiet, kind of like she's embarressed about it, but still she's real persistant about it. So I go in the kitchen to make sure they have food and water. They do. And she's still meowing. So I reach down and pet her, and try and rub her belly, sometimes still a ruff area with us, aparentlly today was one of those days because she lightly bites me on the hand when I try and pet her on the belly. But she still keeps meowing. So I go off to work, and when I get home 7 hours later, she still meowing! I don't know what her deal is. Has she just suddenly got something to talk about?

Has Gizmo been spayed? I can't remember for sure, but I think yes. Anyhow, if she hasn't she might just be in heat. That causes a lot of talking.

Watch her carefully the next few days - is she "worrying" one place on her body? That could means something hurts. Is she peeing and pooping normally? Is she sleeping more or less than usual? Have there been any outside cats visiting? Any other changes.

Watch for symptoms of feline illness - lethargy, lack of appetite, drinking too much or too little, changes in bowel or bladder habits. If these occur check with the vet ASAP.

If she still seems abnormally chatty after a couple of weeks and you can't seem to find a cause (change in her environment most likely) you should also check with a vet.

Good luck!
Heres' hoping she just wants to talk.

Well, it has been abnormally hot in the apartment. Since it's November they've turned my air conditioner off, but it's been like 78 degrees outside so it's really hot and stuffy inside. I can't open the windows because then the cats will get out (I'm on the second floor) belive me, Gizmo has done it, I had to save her. (She was walking on a very thin leadge--scary!) So maybe she's just hot, she is long haired. I know I've been hot. I've been putting ice cubes in they're water for them to try and keep them cool. Thankfully the temp's. going down now and it should start cooling down inside as well.
BTW yes, Gizmo has been spayed.
Another thing I guess it could be is I just started a new job and I'm away from the apartment a lot more often now. Could she just maybe miss me? But I've had other jobs and she's never missed me enough to talk to me before. Humm.
She and Cubbie both have been less activie the past few weeks. They're normally running around chassing each other up and down the hallway, but the past couple of weeks they've mostly been sleeping or just lounging. I've been contributing it to the heat. I mean, even I've been lazy due to it! If they don't perk up once it cools down I'll probubly take them in if I can round up the money.
Thanks for your help!

Update on Gizmo. She's back to her old, quiet self. Right now she's happly playing with a twist tie. She's so crazy! She meowed once when I got home from work and said hello to her, but that was all she's said since. I'll keep an eye on her though, just to make sure she's okay. I think I may have figured out why she was so talkitive last night though. I cleaned out her litter box last night, and pewwy! She's very picky about her litter box.

Maybe it was the litterbox or the heat. Who knows - hopefully all will be back to normal (whatever that is for a cat!) very soon!
