Outdoor Pen

bast May 28, 2003 07:50 AM

Finally,

Photos of my new outdoor pen for my trio of BTS. They were out for a few days but had to be pulled in due to another spell of cold and wet weather...or as we are calling it in New England...the winter that wouldn't die!

It is 15X6 feet long. As you can see there are some grassy/weedy areas, open dirt and a rock pile with burrows underneath. The rockas are slanted to the south to maximize morning "warm-ups". Since the photo was taekn I have added a 2 foot diameter X 1 inch deep water bowl.

These were old cold frames used to start and overwinter vegetables. I made frames out of PVC one inch pipe and hardware cloth. They will be secured with 1/4 inch steel cable and pad locks. Not perfect but enough to be a pain to break into.

Hopefully this crappy weather will end and they can be out 24-7 for a few months soon!

Thanks for letting me share,

Brian

Great looking enclosure. Do u mean to tell me u have to chain it up cos someone might try and steal the BTS???? For love or money??

Yep, Australia has some fantasitc and unique creatures, and the great thing is that u can see alot of them in suburbia and even the city...lots of sulpher-crested cockatoos (noisy b...things), possums (the ones at our place sneak into the house at night and cause havoc),fruit bats, snakes (every aussie kids knows you don't walk into long grass!)and lizards (there was a legless lizard under the garbage bin when I put it out recently) And lots of homes have a resident blue-tongue living under the house or in the garden...they stay in the one territory for years and can become quite a part of the family (if a dog or cat doesnt get 'em first.)

Yes, its a herp lovers wonderland...'cept as i said, u r discouraged from keeping them!! I am going to email Nationals Parks and Wildlife today and get the low-down on licences etc.
Bye for now, Susan
