How to keep from killing cat who likes water

Ravyn11 Jan 28, 2004 11:11 AM

Okay, so I'm not really going to kill him, but he is getting frustrating!

Oliver was born the first week of September, so he's about just about five months old. He's recently decided he loves water! I tried to use a squirt bottle to keep him from undesirable behaviors but it quickly stopped working. He's taken to dumping the dog water dish so he can play in the puddles on the linoleum. I can't run the sink without him climbing in it to play with the faucet. I can't leave the toilet open or he'll play in the toilet. He has yet to jump in the shower with me but if he is in the bathroom while I'm showering, I can see him debating it...and when I'm done he'll immediately climb in to play in the wet tub. I think the actual noise of the shower bothers him too much to literally jump in while its running.

I've had cats who have enjoyed drinking from the faucet while it was running, but never a cat that loved water to the point he was making a mess and getting in the way.

On the other hand, when he got in the fireplace and came out all black and covered in soot, it made it REALLY easy to give him a bath!

There's not much you can do about a water baby cat except be very careful. I think getting a heavier dog dish will help with him tipping it over - that would be one less frustration. And get everyone in the household to close the toilet for the safety of the cat. Usually families are pretty good about this, but will need a lot of reminding. (This is very helpful if you live with a man - no cold-rim surprises in the middle of the night when you have to go!)

As he grows older he'll become less of a nuisance about water and things in general. Enjoy his quirkiness now!

I don't know if it will stop. Astro still does that! He is 11.5 years old!

He wasn't allowed to before we adopted him this past March, so maybe he is reliving his youth now!

But no matter, make sure you don't accidentally turn on the garbage disposer when he is in the sink! Scared AStro half to death! But didn't stop him! I wasn't watching him, but what I was doing and didn't realize he was right there ready to get the water...

Silly kitty!

Here is a picture, but he does knock over the bowls to play with the water...

Tucker does the same thing. I think he likes to hear us yell at him. He also used to sit on top of the dog's water bowl. We have one of those self water bowl things. It was so funny. He loved to watch the bubbles. Now he is a little to big to sit on top of it.
