My Tony will only drink water from a dripping faucet - help!

keely Mar 17, 2004 04:58 PM

I have an 11-month-old neutered male named Tony. He doesn't drink water out of his water dish. He will only drink from the kitchen faucet or bathtub faucet. Whenever he hears either, he comes running.

I have a fear that he will become dehydrated or have other problems due to this.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

(None of my other cats are this way. We think Tony is mostly Turkish Angora (who love the water, I think) -- is this why?)

THANK YOU...Keely

There is a product called a drinkwell pet fountain that Tony will probably love.

Many cats just prefer the fresher tasting water from the tap. The drinkwell recirculates the water, but keeps it aerated so that it tastes better.

It could be because Tony is a Turkish Van that he is attracted to water, but I've heard of many other cats who were not TV's who also enjoyed running water.

Anyhow, check out drsfostersmith.com and you'll be able to find it.

One of mine won't drink out of the bowl. That's only for getting paws wet and splashing...

Just kidding about the spotted Aby part. (Bengals and Abys behave so similarly, I joke that they're the same breed.) But he really is a Bengal, and he really won't drink out of a bowl.

Hi Lisa,

I had an Aby for 17 years and just lost her a few months ago.

I guess I didn't look close enough at your picture, just noticed the ear and face and it reminded me of my girl.

Interesting to hear that there are similarities in the 2 breeds.

Love your baby!

Keely

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your girl.

I've never lived with an Aby, but every time someone tells me a story about their Aby, it sounds like a Bengal story. The only big difference I hear about from people who live with both breeds is that Bengals are much more talkative than Abys. Behaviorally, they seem very similar IMHO.

Good luck with the fountain!

My "Abby" girl was the best cat. She was a snuzzler and always wanted to hug and kiss. She was vocal only at certain times, like when she would come down the hallway with one of her toys, especially. All good memories...

Thanks again for your kind words and I can't wait to try the "water fountain."

My bengal is similar. She bathes in her dish, but will only drink water out of a toilet if she finds one with a lid up, or out of a full sink. She won't drink out of the tap unless she's up to her armpits standing in water. So,I have to fill the sink for her, and then she stops complaining. Until then, she complains like only a bengal can... sigh.

Yup I have two that will only drink from the faucet. Moxie used to only drink from the faucet but she has a drink well fountain (she lives at a different house then the other two).

Hi from Keely and Tony!

I will definitely get a drinkwell fountain. I believe that may do the trick. When we take a vacation or are just away from home, I don't want to have to worry that Tony is not drinking.

Some cats seem to be a ***little*** neurotic...

Anyway, thank you all again -- great talking with you!

Sincerely,
Keely and Tony and Lily and G.B. and Dottie

We have 2 cats that also prefer to drink from the faucet. We have tried the drink well fountain but they don't like the sound of the motor. They do however like a table fountain.

My Cassie meows at the faucet and frantically runs in and out of the bathroom until I go in and leave a dripping faucet on for her! haha

LOL, this has nothing to do with faucet drinking, but I love that photo!! Look at that little kitten admiring herself while posed in crystal. Classic!

Those sure are beautiful pictures, I wish I had my scanner working! I've had many different cats and all of them refused their water dishes for a faucet or the toilet. Even my snooty prissy persian wouldn't turn down toilet water if he found it available. All my previous cats were male and I thought it was a guy thing, but then I got Myrtle and she too won't drink from bowl. Lucky for us the bathroom faucet drips. But I have found that she (and other cats I've had) like to drink from my own glass of water. So I give her a fresh glass of water twice a day next to her food dish and she's fine!

Nah, Sam the Monster Cat will only drink from faucets (or nowadays, sitting there with his mouth open while I squirt water from a syringe into his mouth!)
