Question About Catnip

southernsunbryn Jul 28, 2004 08:15 AM

Just a quick question: why does catnip have no effect on some cats? I have had three cats during my life (two I have now, one as a child) and none of them have cared one whit for catnip. I have heard all these stories about cats going nuts over the stuff, but mine have no reaction to it whatsoever. Anyone know what the deal is?

Great topic!
I've had a couple cats not care for catnip. The cat I have now goes crazy over it for the first couple of days, then it wears off. Cat nip can go stale and lose it's effect.

I also have heard it depends on the age of the cat. Some kittens aren't attracted to catnip until they are older (6 months). Have you tried giving it to them as adults?
Have you tried fresh stuff? Our cats like the freshly grown/dried to the older stuff bought at the store.

Well, my first cat, who we had from the time he was 2 until he was 21 (when he died) never liked catnip, and my three year old doesn't like it either. My mother has an herb garden and just grew some catnip, so I will get some from her and see if they like it.

I have read where it is really a pre-disposed thing about whether or not cats are sensitive to catnip. Frankly, I really have never had a cat who has really cared much, although one of my female cats went on a pee spree when confronted with fresh nip. Needless to say, fresh catnip was not an attraction at our house anymore.

The reaction is genetic, and it can vary. If your cat is not attracted to catnip, then you have more than likely gotten a cat who doesn't have the genes for it.

And now if you can explain why my dog ate a catnip mouse we are in business.

One of my former cats (now at Rainbow Bridge) was like that. She would eat some catnip and maybe become more relaxed, but otherwise had no reaction to it.
The cats I have now go crazy over catnip. The both act like they're high and tend to fight over it. I guess they think that the other cat is trying to steal their portion of the catnip. As stated in another post, it probably has to do with genetics.
