cat sits on square things

neander Nov 25, 2004 01:29 PM

My cat has a very odd habit of sitting on square objects. About ninety percent of the time, when she is sitting still, it is on something like a book, a sheet of newspaper, or the cable box -- anything square or rectangular. I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered similar behavior in their cat. I can't imagine why she prefers squares over other shapes.

Cats are funny when they select a resting spot. Probably your cat feels that something square looks like a perfect "nest". Most cats actually seem to prefer rounded objects though.

Put a piece of paper in the middle of a football stadium and soon a cat will come and lie on it. Cats like to lie on things – pieces of paper, folded towels, clothing, books, whatever.

There are several possible reasons for this. For one thing, cats like to be near us. They know that if they plop themselves right under our noses, so to speak, they will get attention, and it is usually good attention. They have a need for warmth and security, and this obviously fills their need. They also want to leave their scent on anything that belongs to us because it makes them feel more secure. Whenever I wash my comforter and put it back on the bed, KatyKatt hops up on the bed and proceeds to 'remark' it with her paws.

Cats also like small spaces, and that might explain why they will pick a small defined area like a folded towel or skirt on a larger area like the bed. It might be just instinct – or it might be that need for warmth that draws them to an added certain texture of material.

Whatever the reason, it's just another fascinating aspect of your cat's behavior for you to observe. So when your kitty is suddenly lying on your newspaper right under your nose, take advantage of this compliment and pay her some attention. The quirkiness of cats is just one of the reasons we love them and find them so fascinating.

Here's a picture of my cat, Katrina, who loves to lie on folded towels.

My cats do all the same behavior that everyone is speaking of with towel, papers, clothing & right under my nose behavior too.

And yes it is fascinating to me too! I have always been dog a owner having a reation to cats as a kid. Allergy free now!

I grew up thinking cats were more aloof and independent animals.
As of the past few years they are exactly the opposite from my personal experience. Like you said they just want to be near their humans and will do it in any fashion needed to get you're attention.

I personally love how no matter where you go in the home they are somewhere in that room with you.

They are wonderful pets and love to see the "strange behavior"
habits of cats surface in our home. A total JOY!
