Kitten sucking own nipples

tmejias Jan 31, 2005 10:14 AM

I just got a kitten that sucks it's own nipple. It's always the same one so its getting a little swollen and red. I find it wierd and I don't know how to prevent it! Please help!

Probably you should go to the vet to be sure there is nothing irritating the nipple. If this turns out to be purely behavioral, then perhaps a little "Bitter Apple" or "Bitter End" (found at large pet supply stores) applied to the area can help. Also your vet may recommend an E collar which can prevent the kitten from sucking on himself.

Kittens tend to suckle when they need or feel contentment, but suckling on it's own nipple needs to be prevented to that he/she doesn't get a serious medication problem due to irritation.
