Bacterial??

stefaran Oct 13, 2003 08:37 PM

I have an adult male who has recently lost a lot of wieght. He received parasite treatment along with all my other geckos as prescribed by my vet, but has shown no improvment. He has runny, very very smelly poop. Could he have a bacterial infection? What are the symptoms?

Just wanted the opinions of some more experienced gecko people!
Thanks!

I'd say yes, based on the runny, smelly poop. The smell is a sure sign of bacterial infection. What were you using to treat the parasite infection? I had one leo w/ flagellates (parasites) & one w/ bacterial infection. Both were treated w/ Flagyl, but both required two courses, about a week apart, to cure the problems.

You run the risk of toxication with your leo, because there's a very thin line between how much Ivermectin you need in order for it to be effective and how much will end up being fatal for your leo. It's been known to cause seizures and death in herps. Given that there are safer options for deworming your leo (Panacur is much more effective and much safer), you should look to other medications.

Bacteria's a possibility, but Ivermectin is only meant to target certain parasites, so I wouldn't rule out parasites either. Best way to find out is to take your leo in or at least get another fecal done.

I really think you should look into finding another vet. Like most have said the treatment you gave them is really risky or you should ask them for a less risky treatment like pancur. I hope you he doesn't have the same problem as the female you had did, but i have to wonder if she had a bad reaction to the treatment they prescribed.

How are the two babies you got from me doing?
