The Toilet

rexyboy Jun 01, 2005 07:40 AM

I know this sounds kinda yucky. But I have just got to see what others say. My cat will not let me go the restroom without him. He will sit and watch me take care of business. Then when I am done, he will climb onto the toilet tank for the big flush. As far as I know, he doesn't get in the toilet for a drink. I haven't caught him or seen any messy water anyways. But part of me is wondering if perhaps I should try to train him to use the toilet. Or do you think he is just amazed with the swirlig water? It is so weird. If I am in the restroom, with the door closed....he will be right on the other side with his nose tring to get under the door. One thing he did that was so funny. While is was sitting on the pot. And he was watching me, driving me nuts. I showed him a piece of toilet paper (clean of course). When I came home from work that evening, the whole roll was all over the house.

Oh no! You SHOWED him the toilet paper? Wrong thing to do, now you'll have to teach him to leave it alone! HaHa!
Seriously, all three of my cats must absolutely be in the bathroom with me. They practically trip me getting there first. I usually just talk to them, ask them why they insist on not letting me alone. I have to warn our guests the make sure the door is tighly shut OR ELSE! THey show no interest in learning how to use the toilet. Just like to jump on top of it, play with the water in it (I try to keep the lid shut because cleaning solutions can make them ill)and basically drive me nuts lookin' at me too! They like running water and I've provided them with fountains, but they still like to rush into the bathroom all the time. Good luck!

Cats seem to have an unreal fascination with water - also, excuse the bluntness here, when you eliminate you give off what is a fascinating odor to your cat. Cats "read" both urine and feces to determine all sorts of things about their friends and their enemies. Both of these facts probably explain why your cats have such a fixation for the bathroom.

I just remembered a funny story about my bridge kitty Daisy who ADORED the bathroom. Not long after I adopted her my boyfriend (now my DH) went into my bathroom and she followed him in. He was the first man she'd ever observed at the toilet. He came back howling with laughter because she had this absolutely incredible look on her face like, "WHAAT?"

Alto - I bet she had a strange look after watching a man for the first time! LOL

Never show the cat the toilet paper! Now you have done it! No toilet paper will ever again be safe in your house.

My cats have one litter box in the toilet area of the master bath so they feel they must "share" in my experience. Nothing is funnier than seeing them line up for the big rush to use the litter box while "momma" is in there! I swear they make me feel like I have to keep sitting there until they are all done! Who says cats aren't social?

Also, I always keep the lid down on the seat. Toilet bowl cleaners are terribly toxic to cats so do not take the chance that your cat will drink from the toilet. Cats love to drink moving water, so the chances are your cat has been doing just that.

I like this thread! Lol!

My cats are not THAT fascinated by toilets, toilet water, paper or the smell of it all, but they do wander in when one of us sits, and Tommy usually wants a sip of water from the tap, which I then open for him. My other cat, Noodle, likes to play a little game with the bathroom mat, which has to be moved around for her ... sometimes, but rarely, she will go into the shower and pee into the drainage hole, to keep me company .

Oh, this is such a great thread! BATHROOM KITTIES!

While my bathroom is in the master bedroom or rather, my bedroom, and I'm usually here alone, I rarely close the bathroom door and always have cats following me into the bathroom. On the rare occassion that I do close the door, however, I seem to have kitties on the other side of the door meowing loudly and little paws coming under the door. It's just easier to open the door and let them in. They seem to have a ritual of some sort...Samantha sits at my feet expecting me to pet her head while the others just patiently sit by and wait until she's finished and then they want their heads petted too, one at a time. Depending on how long I take, Samantha, then Simba will jump in my lap and expect me to pet them.

Then.........when I'm finally done, they all walk towards the kitchen for me to feed them. What is this? Bathroom equals cat feeding time???? So, OK, I'll go open a couple of cans for them. I think that they have me trained!

I remember how when I was in the hospital a couple of years ago, Pam told me how the cats would just sit by their food bowls when she walked in and Meow to the top of their lungs. It didn't take her long to figure out what they wanted. haha. These little characters of ours are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.

Norman, my 14 lb. black cat, will climb up on your lap while you're down to business - he's particularly fond of my husband. C.C. just plays with your feet.
