Digging in the water

PurpleRhino Jun 22, 2005 11:23 AM

One of my three cats, Patches, has started “digging” at the water. Maybe he is just splashing. He gets the water all over the floor and wood-work. When he takes a drink, he will only drink from the side of the water. I have changed the bowl, changed the location, changed the type of water, (tap and filtered) and he still does it. Why does he paw and splash at the water? And how can I stop it?

It sounds like he may be uncertain about the depth of the water. Try putting a mug of water down on the floor and see if he prefers "tall water". A lot of cats do.

There is probably not a whole lot you can do to stop him from splashing if he is just playing, however. Cats will be cats.

To protect carpet and wood work put a plastic sheet, a placemat or something similar underneath.

It's it STRANGE when they do that? My cat Norman used to do that ALL THE TIME! We'd have to refill his dish 2 and 3 times a day because he was "batting" the water out. He hasn't done it in awhile. Only when he's feeling mischevious. I think he's now okay with the bowl his water is in... It's SUCH A MESS! We had to put towels around the waterdish to keep the water from getting EVERYWHERE!
