biting issue in one year old Manx

larandsandy Aug 10, 2005 01:31 PM

I have a one year old female manx that bites and chews things. She has chewed holes in clothes, bags, socks or anything that happens to be laying around. We try to keep everything put away, but with two kids that is hard. She chewed through the telephone cord also. We have her on an excellent food (Iams) and don't think she is lacking in vitamins or anything there. She also will bite us if we touch her or pet her when she does not want to be petted. I don't know how to stop this. She eats and swallows the material or plastic when she chews up something so I worry it will cause a blockage or something serious. She has lots of toys, gets played with alot and I even tried buying small dog rawhide bones to chew on itstead. She is one years old now so I don't think it's a teething thing. Any one have any suggestions? Thanks

This is probably a behavioral rather than physical problem, since her diet is OK. If you haven't had the vet do a good tooth check, then perhaps that is in order.

There is a product called Bitter Apple (also called Bitter End) which can be put on things to stop the chewing. Some people recommend a mixture of cayen pepper and water - enough water to make a paste to smear on things that need to be protected.

The biting while being petted is another matter. She probably "maxes out" fairly quickly. Watch for signs of aggression like ears turning and whiskers laid back and stop petting at that point.

Good luck!

I agree, you should have a vet look at her teeth to rule out any problems there.

You also want to take care that electrical cables are out of reach for her or smeared with Bitter Apple or something similar.

I have no other helpful advice, sorry!

Might be a good idea to get he a chewy bone. But ask your vet first.
