retreiving cat

jktkw Aug 13, 2005 03:26 PM

How unusual is a cat which brings a ball or fake mouse back to you in order for you to throw it again, just like the "D" word?

Not as unsusual as you might think. I had a cat who would bring back stuff - but only for about three throws. Then she'd quit and look at me lik, "You're supposed to go get it for me now!"

Smile, it will make them wonder what you are up to!

I wish mine WOULD retrieve! It's always me who has to get up and get the toy back. You're lucky you have such a helpful cat!

My cat, Boris, loves to play "fetch". He has a soft ball that we throw and he will bring it back and drop it at our feet for us to throw again. He does this until he tires of the "game", which generally lasts for 5 to 10 minutes. But he will also bring us other "toys" to play with him as well those these do not require throwing.

Thanks Pam.....Smokey does pretty much the same thing, even to the point of dropping the "mouse" on the end of the srm, on my recliner..this cat has really converted me from a dog person. Fopr that I am grateful to her. John T

My cat "brings it." He'll do this indefinitely until I stop or until he gets distracted after about a half hour. He thinks that "bring it" means "come here" now because I would always say it when he fetched.

The one thing that I did not mention is that Boris will often do this at 3 am in the morning - he considers it time to play. I have learned to throw a ball and still sleep somewhat. However there are times he has brought other toys which promptly go on the bed and I end up sleeping on them and find them in the morning.

My Mom's cat Fred (brother of my 2 cats) is an AVID "fetcher". I wish mine would catch on...

HOWEVER, my 2 have been know to do this: when I throw a toy to my cats, they pick it up, play with it a little, and PUT IT IN THEIR TOY BASKET when they're done. No kidding. They don't fetch, but they clean up after themselves quote well...

They clean up their toys!?!? Wow, I would trade the fetching for that any day! We have cat toys in every corner of our apaprtment, including our bed. She wakes me up by dropping a "mouse" on my chest and meowing in my ear. Anyway, thanks for your response.

WOW, You have to kidding, I wish my cats to do that!!!!!, you can't take 3 steps in the house and found a toy, ball, string, anything that belongs to them.
Congratulations

My Bandit started doing that years ago. Fetch is his favorite game and sparkly balls are the best objects for fetch. More cats than you'd think have trained their owners to throw for them

Smokey started out with small foam balls(about 1 1/2 inches diameter) but when my wife brought home fake mice, she ignores the balls now. She never liked plastic ones with bells inside, or anything that squeaked, etc. We don't know what to get her next. We live in a very small apartment and I was thinking of building her a catwalk around the ceiling....we saw this setup on tv. I never thopught of myself as a cat person until Smokey adopted us! Thanks for writing.
