Coon Cat keeps pulling out its hair!

TJ. Jan 04, 2006 12:50 PM

Hi. We have 2 Main Coon Cats and one of them has been biting and pulling out the hair on both sides of her lower back down near the tail. She's been doing this for quite a while and now has two bare racing stripes leading from her tail to nearly half way up her back...about as far as she can reach. She also pulls out the hair on the lower half of her tail, too...making her look like a small Lion with a Mohawk! At times the area is so sensitive that she doesn't want it to be touched. Also appears that she suddenly starts in on it as if there is something biting her. We've tried every 'over the counter' medicine and trick and advice from friends but we are all stumped. Havn't brought her in to the vet yet. Thought I'd ask here first. I'll see if I have a good photo of it and include it here as soon as I find it. Thanks! TJ.

The cat definitely needs to see a vet ASAP. This kind of hair pulling could be either an extreme reaction to fleas or some other allergy at work, or even anxiety. Anyhow, it will take a professional to look at her and diagnos the problem. Good luck!

TJ diffently get her to a vet.I would say that it is a allergy and make sure you tell the Vet you suspect this. This is curable but it will take a little time.If the Vet dosen't improve her within two weeks then get a second opinion.
If she has scabs on her back then i would say its pretty diffent that she has a allergy.
Pkease keep us informed on her.
