my cat always puts water on his head between his ears

wads Jan 11, 2006 12:43 AM

All black cat with green eyes - looks like a little alien when ears pulled back - approx. 5 years old - likes to bite but playful bites although some a bit hard - petite frame

Pound cat we understand was returned 4 times to the shelter before we adopted him. While he is thin, but not unhealthy thin, he has the most energy of our three cats. Additionally, he loves to chase and is always chasing our female cat, especially away from the food bowl. We think he's been an outdoor cat in the past as he always loves to go outside. Now that he's learned we won't let him become an outdoor cat, he actually jumps into the vinyl pet carrier anytime we head for the back door to go outside, even if it means being constrained to the carrier. We also firmly beleive that this cat would be really tough to keep as a single pet in the house - he clearly needs others pets to chase. Anything to get outside! Perhaps this is why he wa returned to the shelter so many times.

But his love of water may be the strangest thing about this cat. We can't figure out why but he frequently puts water, either from the water bowl or the bathtub faucet, on his forehead between his ears and eyes. This behavior occurs often, at least several times a day and almost always late at night. Also, he seems to do this before he gets a little rowdy or after returning from a trip out-of-doors - It's as if he thinks he is Rambo or something! This ritual is just keeping us wondering in amazement - any ideas or comments about this strange cat behavior are welcome...

My first impression is he is a very intelligent cat with a lot of character.I really believe that you will better understand him as soon as he gets you trained well. You got a keeper.
My cat has me trained very well and during the training period he used to toilet paper my front room when i left him home alone and at nights he woud reach high on the back of a kitchen chair and upset it and just for his amusement he would jump up on the bed and swish his tail over my face. Can you imagine waking up with a long furry thing on you face.
I think you got a long and loving relationship there and he will have you playing fetch in no time at all.

He's a precious baby - your image didn't come through in your original post and I'm taking the liberty of putting it here:

Often when cats do strange things it is because they accidentally did it and then got a pleasurable response. For instance your cat might have accidentally splashed water on his head and then for some reason was allowed to go outside. This my have happened a few times. He somehow learned that if he splashed water on his he'd get his wish to go out. So the splashing continues!
