Our cat eats clothing and blankets!

catlovers-mother Feb 01, 2006 05:20 PM

Our 17 month old cat has been eating holes (big ones) in soft fuzzy type materials like polor fleece blankets and sweatshirts. It started with shoelaces. We have tried changing her food, offered new toys and we now close her out of rooms. Any suggestions?

When a cat starts eating woolen things or cloth, it is usually an indication that she is not absorbing her nutrients properly. You should have her checked by the vet and perhaps s/he can prescribe some vitamin suppliment for her.

What kind of food do you feed her and how much.

We have been feeding her Iams dry cat food. She had the kitten food for the first year, then the original adult food, and the last time I accidently bought the lamb and rice formula. We thought maybe she didn't like it (it seems like the she has been worse about eating unedible things lately) and are switching her to Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care. I was told it was easy to digest. We always keep food in her bowl. She is average weight and active. She looks like she has Siamese in her but her mother was an orange tabby cat.

The reason why a vet check might be in order would be to determine if the cat is actually digesting her food correctly. No matter how good the food is, if she's not absorbing what she needs from it she could feel mal-nurished and be eating wool to compensate. Or she may be stressed over something.

Good luck!
