Scratching walls

whatswithmycat Mar 05, 2006 08:51 AM

My cats (I have two, one male, one female) regularily scratch on the walls of their covered litter box and the walls of the closet where their litter box is kept. They just stand either in the litter box, half-in-half-out, or completely outside and rake their claws over the walls. Why do they do this? It can get irritating sometimes since they will do it for up to ten minutes sometimes...anyone else have this problem? I only address it as a "problem" because I have had many cats over the years and never seen this type of behaviour before, so I am wondering if something is wrong?

ROFL...Actually it is common.Try putting more cat litter in the box.Cats are very clean there just trying to cover what they just did.
Babba has a habit of wanting to go to his litter box when i go to the bathroom. One time he ran short of litter and was trying to put my pants over it.Hey i was still in them.
Maybe pulling his litter box away from the wall will help.

This is very common beause they are just trying to cover their "business" andn soemtimes will spend what seems like a long time covering it by scratching at whatever is surrounding the area. Bigger litterbox and/or more litter may lessen their attempts, but it os otherwise harless. Hey! I have a cat that for 18 years tries to cover his food the same way after he's done with the bowl...neurotic! HaHa

My cat does this on ALL my walls and my dressers and the floor and cardboard boxes! She will scratch anything! Its really annoying especially when I'm trying to sleep (I love my earplugs!) She does this also in her litter, it usually means clean my bathroom or thanks for cleaning it or I'm going to annoy you now. (cats are very cryptic creatures lol!)It is very odd though when she just sits there and scrathces at the wall! But I love her all the more for her wierdness!
