Male kitten "plays" with dry food

srises Aug 03, 2006 02:16 PM

Don't know if I should post under strange behavior, or eating problems. My 7 month old male kitten has been doing the following for several months. He will scoop out one or two pieces of dry food from the bowl, and hit/bat it around the floor for several minutes before he eats it. He will sometimes not eat it for an hour or two, just go back and bat it around, "corner" it in his paws and then eventually eat it. He does not seem to eat much of the dry food, only wet. Is this unusual?

Sorry about the delay in getting to your post!

I have not heard of a cat playing with dry food, but it is instinctive for cats to "play" with their prey before they consume it. Perhaps he is feeling like he wants to feel like he's hunted for and caught his dinner! Or maybe he just wants to have fun!

I would guess that your boy is hunting and killing his own dinner. I have a couple that do this too
