Himalayan "cat fits"

HimiGirl Aug 11, 2006 08:46 AM

I have a 11-month old neutered male Himalayan. He is a very friendly guy..always wants to be involved in whatever you are doing. He loves people, and getting attention. He does, however, exhibit some strange behavior sometimes that I can't explain. About twice a day, usually in the morning, he has a "fit". He runs around the house making crazy howling noises, and seems to be chasing after nothing at all. They usually only last about 3 minutes or so. I read somewhere that himalayans can be prone to "cat fits." Is this true, and what, if anything, is the cause?

Hi There,

I think most cats are prone to these "fits". Several of mine do this every day, especially the younger ones. None of them are Himalayan, or even close.

It seems that most cats tend to have these "fits" late at night, so they are sometimes referred to as "late night crazies". It's just a normal cat thing.

I believe they are playing, and also working off energy when they do this. I also believe that they see things we don't, which makes it seem to us that they are going after nothing.

Regards,
PHKitkat

Kitkat is right. A lot of cats are prone to "cat fits" especially at night and early in the morning. These are the prime hunting times for feral cats and so cats are naturally more active. Almost every cat slave can attest to the evening "crazies"!

three of my five always get these "cat fits". It's hilarious to watch, seem pointless to us, but certainly does something for them! I sometimes wish I had that much energy at night, hehe!

Around here we call that chasing beauvarts. A beauvart is apparently an invisable cat prey that all cats know all about and people know nothing about. I have 21 cats and most all of them will suddenly jump up and start racing around the house chasing nothing that I can see but the others must cause sometimes one or more of them join in the chase!!!! My Tabitha used to fly through the kitchen, bank off the wall and take off down the hall in hot pursuit of nothing. If I was in the kitchen she would gently jump and bite my calf on her way through
