Cat calls my name at night

Ella_Bella Aug 13, 2006 12:28 AM

At night I will be trying to get to sleep and my cat Ella Bella will start meowing my name. At first it scared me. I woke up to someone calling my name. She will walk up and down the hall calling it. We have had her for about a year and a half and she had started about 6 months into our relationship. She doesn't do it as much now. Still she does it when I'm gone. My family tells me and somtimes late at night. I was wondering if anyone knew why? O_o

Cats tend to be most active at night. Both of mine have meowed loudly from time to time in the night. A lot of time they just want attention or to play. I had one cat that did it constantly every night and it decreased over time to infrequently meowing in the night -- but that is because I ignored him. He just wanted attention. At 2AM on a work night, I can't jump up and play. Now that they are getting older, I also hear it is common in older cats. Some say they get senile as they age, some say they get disoriented... They don't do it often and if I call their name they come into the bedroom and hop into bed and settle down.

Ella Bella is looking for you - kittens quite commonly call for their mother with a special meow. Somehow Ella Bella has learned that you respond to a meow that resembles your name. She feels very bonded to you and probably looks on you as a mother figure. If you want this behavior to stop, you will have to ignore it totally, but it sure would be hard. It sounds so precious that she calls for you!

Smile, it will make them wonder what you are up to!

You are so loved she has a special call just for you!

Love your screen name! I gave birth to a daughter nearly 6 months ago - and for a couple of months my husband wanted to name her Elle Belle! (we weren't that cruel)
