Strange sexual behavior

kamyuni Nov 04, 2006 10:50 AM

I got a male kitten when he was 3 months. I castrated him when he was 6 months. At the age of 1/1.5y.o, he started to have a very weired sexual behavior. He takes small pillows, teddy bears, clothes... moves them over a distance to somewhere on the floor, and behaves sexually with them (4 legged above the object, purring very strongly, back carved upwards, penis in errection and in contact with the object). This lasts for a few minutes and then he starts licking his genitals still errect. Some days he might repeat that over a dozen times which is very bothering (remember he is castrated!).

I took him to the vet who was convinced it was a urine infection but it was not. I then gave him a homeopathic medicine that calms sexual needs but this had no effect. Feliway didn't have any effect either. No vets or cat breeders seem to have heard about such a behavior.

I am very discouraged by this bothering behavior. Would anyone have the slightest clue what it could be?

Hi,

This behavior is not all that unusual in male cats, whether they are castrated or intact. One of my boys regularly mounts a stuffed animal I keep on my bed. It is exactly what it appears to be, sexual behavior. In some cases it can also indicate dominance over another cat. When this happens a male cat may mount another male in the household. This has happened in my home.

I just accept this sexual behavior as norma for some cats. It is harmless as long as it doesn't involve aggression toward other cats.

Regards,
PHKitkat

I have a friend who has a 6 or 7 year old male fixed chocolate Lab who does this same thing. He has a stuffed ducky that he has his way with fairly often. They have learned to accept it -- but handle ducky with care and wash him often...

I am surprised that no vets have ever heard of this behavior since it is quite common in neutered males. Unfortunately it does bring some pleasure and thus almost impossible to break.

Have you gone to a feline only vet? I am a bit worried that he is licking at his erect penis - makes me wonder if there is some irritation there. The frequence is bothersome too. You might discuss the possibility of some antianxiety meds - they may slow or stop this, if there is no underlying medical cause.

I have a tiny flame point siamese that does that to my huge, strong, black domestic short hair. That doesn't bother me as much as the fact that the black cat really seems to enjoy it most times. He'll close his eyes and lay still and sometimes he purrs when the siamese is dominating him.

When I catch the little cat doing that, 9 times out of 10 the little guy will start licking the big guy on the neck as if he's telling me, "Look! I'm loving him! I'm being good!".

That cat is so weird.
