Reflexive biting?

luvfraz Nov 04, 2006 06:26 PM

Our 7 year old spayed female has started a very strange thing. Whenever we scratch her at the base of her tail, she immediately started licking and biting her leg. Then as soon as we stop, she stops. It almost seems like we are hitting a nerve or ticklish spot. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be.

Hi There,

Cats will sometimes have a reflex like this when they are itchy. I would first check for fleas, and if your cat has any, please get something safe and effective from the vet. If the area at the base of the tail is scaly or scabby, an allergy may be present (to fleas or something else) and I recommend a vet check.

If an allergy is present, a steroid injection may be required to give your cat some relief.

Wow, that's soo wierd! My cat does that too. I thought Tigger was the only cat that did that. Tigger is 10 and doesn't currently have a flea problem. However, his little anal glands get back up and have to be cleaned out every month or so at the vet. I wonder if it has anything to do with that.
