Strange nursing behavior

assie2071 Feb 03, 2007 08:00 PM

I have a kitten that will be turning one on the 20th. This last week he has started this strange suckling behvaior. He will take the fleece blanket on my couch (the only blanket I've seen him do it to) and suck on it while he needs. It seems to mimik the behavior of a kitten who's still nursing. He hasn't chewed on the blanket all, and since it's fleece it doesn't have threads so I'm not worried about it hurting him. But I would like to know why he does this.

Hi There,

Your kitten does this because he is very happy! The behavior stems from kittenhood when he was nursing from his mom. Nursing kittens knead to help stimulate milk flow. This is a very happy time for a kitten.

One of my boys, Freddie, likes to knead my arm and suck on my shirt or PJs. He has done this since he was a baby and is now 3 years old. Sometimes he will even wake me up in the middle of the night doing this. It's his way of showing me that he loves me.

Regards,
PHKitkat

thanks, that I thought it was, but I wasn't sure. Makes me feel better that is nothing bad.
