Kitten throwing his droppings

ariion Dec 05, 2007 06:04 PM

I have a 12 week old kitten. He uses the litter box, buries it then sniffs around, digs it up and throws the feces from the box. Always using his left rear foot. It goes on the floor and on the wall. Sometimes as much as 3 feet high on the wall. I haven’t changed to a different type of litter or changed the litter box. I’m not cleaning it with any strange or unusual cleaning agent, just warm water as always. Something is bothering him but I can’t figure out what it is.

Thanks for your help,

Ariion

Hi,

This behavior does not necessarily mean that something is bothering your kitten. It might just be a habit of his, or an unusual way of playing. I have known kittens who like to bat their feces around a room.

It's going to be difficult to try and change this without risking your baby avoiding the litterbox. You want to try and change the behavior, and his routine, by interrupting him before he does the digging up part. Yet the last thing you want is to scare him while he is in his box.

Because he is so young, I think your best bet is to try to get him interested in an interactive toy once he has covered up. This would be looked at as a positive thing by him. The only thing is that you have to be able to catch him before he gets into the act. This can be difficult especially if you spend long hours away from home.

Otherwise, this may be something you have to live with. Not the most pleasant thing, but not all that bad either.

Hi PHKitkat,

Thanks for the advice about distracting him with a toy. I'll try that.
