Not sure what happened

Chatanuga Apr 15, 2008 09:22 AM

Last evening, I was upstairs, and Chessie and Casey were downstairs. I heard a loud clattering/crashing sound downstairs. I got over to the top of the stairs as Chessie came running up into the upstairs hallway looking back down the stairs petrified. I ran downstairs and didn't find anything wrong in the living room. I went into the kitchen and saw that the water bowl (taped to the inside of an unused clean litterbox to collect Casey's water flingings) had been moved. Water was splashed out in several directions. Casey was in a corner looking spooked, but not as scared as Chessie. I cleaned up the water, and Chessie slowly came down the stairs and into the living room. Casey slowly approached him, at which point Chessie arched his back with his hair standing on end, obviously not happy with the site of Casey. Casey backed off, and after about 15 tense minutes or so, Chessie calmed down. As the evening went on, things went back to normal.

I'm not sure what happened, but I'm leaning towards the thought that Chessie was drinking from the water bowl, and Casey approached and tried to engage him in one of their wrestling matches. Either Chessie didn't want to play, or when they started to play, the water bowl got hit and splashed water all over, scaring them both. As far as Chessie acting all upset towards Casey, either he didn't want to play and got angry with Casey, or when they spooked themselves, he associated it with Casey. I've just never seen them so tense towards each other like that since the weekend I brought Casey home.

You may never be sure what happened. Whatever it was it scared them both and for a few tense minutes they blamed each other when they met again. When the scary event did not reoccur, both cats settled down. Glad that things returned to normal for the boys.

Yeah, it was quite tense. Haven't felt tension in the air like that since they first met. Granted, Casey was a bit calmer about it than Chessie. Once they started touching noses again, Chessie then calmed down. I then made over him (waiting for him to relax his arched back), and he immediately calmed down and started purring again.
