odd behavior

My 7 year old neutered male Persian, Mat, is very friendly and the boss of my 4 cats. Today I noticed he was on top of another male cat and biting the fur on his back. It initially looked like he was trying to mate. I have see him do this several times to the 2 other male cats (he does not go near the female). I scold him when he does this. My vet said it is a dominance type behavior. Any ideas?

My cats do something similar when they get to rough housing around. The only time I intervene is when they start rolling around and knocking things over or when I hear one of them crying out in pain.

Hi,

This is actually quite normal behavior in a multi-cat household. All 3 of my males have done this to other cats, and sometimes a male will mount another male, which also indicates dominance.

I don't break it up unless someone is getting hurt. It's just a normal part of life here.

Regards,
