Do you brush your kitties' teeth?

karlacue Mar 31, 2003 01:44 PM

I was wondering, since lately I have been paying more attention to my pets' mouth (meaning I do clean them everyday, which is NOT EASY) if someone actually do the brushing on their pets' pearly whites on a constant basis? or do you just stick with the dental food and treats?

I do the dental treats myself. I really can't picture Boris letting me brush his teeth. He seems to like the treats and since he eats dry food, that helps keep his teeth clean also.

Well I used to do that only myself, but it seems that (at least in the case of Daisy) I may have to condition her to accept dental cleaning...We are still practicing

I brush a few times a week. I started when my cat was a kitten. She does not enjoy it, and frankly, it is difficult to get her to open her mouth. I am able to get a few strokes in before she departs. It is funny, because I do it in the evening after I brush my teeth, and each night she follows me to the bathroom and sits there waiting. Thus,I assume that she doesn't hate it that much!

I give the tartar control treats and dry food, things seem to be under control...guess in the wild, gnawing bones accomplishes the same thing

I brush Gonzo's teeth daily because he has Stomatitis. Luckily he enjoys it a lot because he is a 22 pound Maine Coon.

I buy the poultry flavored tooth paste from the Vet and he attacks the toothbrush licking it off before I even get it in his mouth.

He purrs the whole time and licks the brush while I am brushing. I use a childs toothbrush and I give him lots of cuddles and pets before the toothbrush even goes in his mouth. There is no struggling or pinning him down. He just sits there.

I tried the dental treats and the dental chews but he is such a pig he just swallows them whole, which defeats the purpose.

I need to talk to my vet so see if maybe big doggy chews might be an alternative for him because of him swallowing small things so fast.

Good luck,
Julie

Gee, how did I miss this post? Oh well, better late than never. Yup..brush all 8 cats teeth 3-4 times a week. They love the CET poultry flavored toothpaste. I find it easiest to use the little finger brushes with the nubs on them. They seemed to fight more if I tried to use the bristle type brushes. It's quite a trip trying to trick one of my x-ferals into coming near me when it's brushing time tough. Usually peg the little guy by offering him some tasty tidbit. You;d think he's get a clue by now, but he falls for that treat trick every time! LOL.
I have to say it has kept them off the vet's table for a long time and the tarter is just now starting to build up after several years of brushing.

WOW! how do you do it? Everyday it's getting more difficult to catch Daisy to clean her teeth and mouth (and now we are only using the mouthwash). As soon as her mouth improves a little bit I need to start working on the toothbrush...Well at least she doesn't bite or scratch at all (good girl)but since she is pretty heavy it is very difficult to hold her in place.
As for Bob...well (sigh) if I hold him more than 10 seconds he puts a BAD fight (my arms are getting marked again with bites and scratches...I thought we had overcome this 'kitten biting' phase)

I know this is an old thread, but I figured I'd post to it anyway. We bought malt flavored toothpaste at the store the other day, and I'm planning on trying to do it with her at least once per week, but haven't tried at all yet since I'm trying not to alienate her. She's just getting used to brushing (her fur) right now. How is it working out for you?-- Jennifer
