Cat stills wants a boyfriend

HeatherR Apr 02, 2003 05:26 PM

I had my cat spayed. For some reason it didn't take. I took her back and the vet did it again. He said she was all good to go. Now my cat is in heat again!
The vet said something about the estrogen could be coming from the kidneys somehow. Does this sound right? He said the ovaries and kidneys were formed from the same cells so sometimes the cells get mixed up.

I have certainly never heard of that myself. Have heard of boy cats that had undesinded testicles that were missed but not on girl kitties. Anyone else??

Me neither, I have heard of them maybe missing part of whatever is taken out for the spay, and having to go back in after the cat goes into heat following spay, but never something like this. I would look for a second opinion, ideally at a clinic who specializes in cats, or a university vet school...both should have more up to date ideas and treatments, and could offer insight. As for the vets reasoning, I can't say it is impossible, but there needs to be something done about this, and if he doesn't have an answer, then you should find someone who does. Also, I am curious if you had to pay for the second spaying of her...

No we didn't have to pay twice. Getting a second opinion is hard to do here where we live, on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

I also wonder, if it is possible for him to do a needle biopsy of the kidneys, and see if estrogen is indeed present. I wouldn't do this until after a second opinion however, and for that matter, I don't even know if one can biopsy for estrogen in a kidney, just a thought. Good luck, this is definetly a perplexing one for me!

You need to see another vet -- a cat oriented vet in a well-equipped veterinary hospital. I'm not any sort of expert, but how can female horomones be produced by anything but the female reproductive organs? That does not sound right.

And I would be extremely unhappy that he botched the surgery the first time. To me that indicates a carelessness that I don't want in a vet. Surgery, even a very routine surgery like a spay, is still surgery and should be performed properly. I'm not saying mistakes beyond a vet's control never happen, but a spay is something a vet performs hundreds upon hundreds of times and shouldn't be rushed through.

I've never heard of anything like this before. I know that in some cases, they miss something in the spay and the piece that is left still produces female hormones, but to have a kidney produce estrogen...well that sounds fishy to me. But I am not a vet, so who knows. I do agree with the others who said to get a second opinion tough. Let us know what happens!
