droopy boobs

madismom May 15, 2003 08:44 PM

hello first time posting here. I have a question.
Our 12 year old himalayan was shaved on tuesday due to matting.
We did this last year and she loved it. So we tried it again.
However, this time the removal of hair has displayed an aging body. Big joints, skinny frames and droopy skin, especially her boobs. I know it sound awful but it is true. She only weighs 7lbs but her *** hang to the ground. Should I get this checked?
The skin under her arm hangs a great deal as well.

She use to be heavier but lost a great deal of weight last summer when I did not notice she could not jump on the counter to get her food anymore. We have since given her a room that is safe from the German shepherd where she can eat and potty in private. Any advice would be wonderful.

I would take your girl to the vet for a complete geriatric exam. If you didn't notice this "droopiness" last year and she has lost weight between now and then, it's definitely time for a vet check. Older cats start showing signs of aging, but a weight loss that is noticeable like you are saying, should definitely be checked.

well she has always had a droopy belly. My husband calls it 15 lbs of skin on a 7lbs frame. She was the runt of the liter and has always been tiny. And the lack of not eating ( due to no longer being able to jump) really caused the weight lost. I took her to the vet at that time and we switched her food again and put the food on the ground in a safe room for her to get to.
Below is a picture I took tuesday night after she got shaved. She was still a bit drugged so it was hard to get the shot but you can see the belly.

I will give the vet a call this afternoon just to be safe.

let me know what you think. Thank you for the help.

Awww....love the pics! Beautiful babies you have. From the picture it looks like the flabby belly alot of cats get along with some loose skin from the weight loss. But I would definitely get her in to the vet for a checkup just to be sure.

Have her thyroid function checked. My 14 year old Maine Coon mix showed the same symptoms you describe at about the same age and it turned out to be hyperthyroid. Apparently it is very common in elder cats and easy to treat. 2 years later he is doing great!
