spitting cobra experiences in Zambia

gaboon_survivor Oct 13, 2003 09:26 PM

...having dinner one evening, we noticed the cat and 3 kittens were all staring at the wood box beside the fireplace, and all had runny eyes...soon we notice a black snake..turned out to be a 7ft cobra...a local friend helped by trying to nail the snake with a slingshot..but it kept spitting at him when he got close, 10-12ft?, so we gave him motorcycle goggles, and when he finnally got it, the goggles were covered in white specs..we never realized a snake had so much capacity..maybe it just came out of hibernation.

another time as a teenager, i reached into the chicken house egg box at dusk and felt a scaly thing, jump back as a cobra stuck but missed..when we killed it it has 5 bumps inside, so we cut the eggs out and put them in the fridge as they werent broken yet...they made a good cobra omlete.

Why is it that you think that anyone in here (people who keep and love venomous reptiles) would be even remotely interested in hearing about your cobra omelette? Or are you just trying to get a rise out of someone?

well I guess your right...a first hand experience with 'free' snakes will seem kind of boring compared to watching them thru a glass box. thought the number of spats my be of interest to someone.

You were bitten by a gaboon viper (or you think) for not paying attention and you killed a cobra for no reason, to me, that makes you an idiot, not experienced.

exactly my thought.

Since he is killing snakes for fun, I think its fair justice that he got bit, if of course, any of it is true

no we didnt kill snakes for fun, or for thrills, it was just for survival...there were no phones, no 911, nearest hospital 3hrs drive away in good weather, so you didnt want to let deadly snakes live in your house. I'm sure if I'd had tv and saw how Steve Irwin the croc guy from down under can grab any snake by the tail and not get bit i probably would have tried.. to my mom's horror.

ok here is my thought

First, he was bit by a gaboon viper

Then was struck at by a cobra that missed

and his buddy and him killed another cobra that was spitting at them, they did so with a sling shot

anyone else here think this kid is lieing???? Sounds like a bit to many stories for me

You forgot about the omelette thing too, yeah I think he's full of it as well. Or maybe he thinks we should be impressed because he is the ONLY ONE in here that has any experience with wild snakes.

yeah I was leaving the omlette story out because it personally makes me sick that someone would even joke about eating an egg that could potentially be good and could hatch out a beautiful animal. If it is a true story, he should be beat for it....

LOL...just to clear things up..they were chicken eggs..snakes like them too, if you cant handle eating chicken eggs than youre missing out on life!! those stories were true from when I was a teenager growing up in Zambia, they are tame compared to some i could share, but obviusly you have lived too shelterd a life to be able to accept such. i got bitten when back visiting when i was 26..which was in 93..I may have deserved it for hunting in only running shoes..in Dec..was shooting destructive wild pigeons for a poor farmer and his family though. i was told it was a gaboon by the dr's, but some experts on this forum think it could have been a puff adder also which is likely..i am interested in finding out if possible.
