newly spayed cat

tonymarinara May 21, 2003 10:06 PM

hi. my sister has 2 cats. one is a couple of years old and the other was introduced later. The first(Tasha) always treated the younger(Shiva) somewhat maternally. Shiva was spayed yesterday and upon returning home, Tasha hissed and acted aggressively. The two had never been seperated before, even for the few hours that it took. Tasha is still acting aggressive. Can anyone tell me why this is or what I should do about it? Will it pass with time?Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It's not unusual for the cat who just came home from the vet to set of stranger alerts in other household cats. Especially when there are only a couple of cats in the house that haven't had a lot of cat to cat introductions in their lifetimes.

The first kitty is just being extra catious right now. "Hmmm, you're starting to smell the same, but I'm still not ready to trust that you're the same cat yet....hmmmph."

It should pass in a couple of days.

This behavior is normal. The newly spayed cat smells like the vets office and doesn't act the same so the first cat is afraid. She doesn't like the new smells on her friend and she isn't sure about the change in her personality. Have your sister take a towel and rub first one cat and then the other with the same towel. Then their scents will match and that will help speed things along. All should return to normal shortly. Cats really hate change of any sort. Good luck and let us know how the girls are doing!
