Please Respond! Bitten by stray cat!

streakn Jul 21, 2003 10:41 PM

My girlfriend works in a vet clinic and was bitten by a stray cat that had been quarantined after biting another person 3 days earlier. The vet says that she should wait 10 days to get the rabies vaccine, at which point he can determine if the animal in infected or not. However, I have read reports that the incubation period in humans can be as short as 5 days after exposure. Please anyone who can provide some info get back to me at this forum or at my email: stillstreakn@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Given the seriousness of rabies, your girlfriend should not delay in contacting the public health offices (perhaps also animal control) in your city for further advice about what to do. Also she should see a regular human doctor ASAP - even though the bite is more than likely not rabid, infections can result. A doctor and the public health officials will be better able to help in a case where a human has had a potential rabies infection that a vet would be.

Please urge her not to delay in getting advice from professionals about this issue.
