how long does FIP virus stay around

pyeeye Jul 22, 2003 04:19 PM

I just had to put my 3 month old kitten, Daisy to sleep today because she had this horrible sickness, FIP. Does anyone know how long the virus will stay live in my house? on my clothes? I have another cat at my boyfriend's house, i havent seen her since i got this kitten, but now i am afraid to see her. i would die if she got sick. Losing this kitten is hard, and i am heartbroken, but i only had her a month, my other cat is 11, and is like my child.

Bless you. I just can't imagine how devasted you must be.

As for the virus, I've heard several differing things about it. It is actually a mutation of the corona virus which in itself is relatively benign. Your best bet at this point would be to clean as much as possible with a bleach/water solution or a disinfectant and wash clothing, bedding, etc. in your washer using the hottest water possible.

Contact your vet about your concerns about the virus lingering. He/she can give you further directions as to how to get a safe environment for your other cat.

Best wishes and good luck. My deepest sympathies on the loss of the kitten.

I am truly sorry for your loss. I understand the devastation something like this can bring because I lost a 6 mo old kitten to FIP also. Like MA stated, FIP is a mutated coronavirus. Coronavirus may live for up to three weeks in the environment. You can use a mixture of household bleach and water (1 cup of bleach in a gallon of water) to disinfect food and water bowls, litter pans, cages, bedding material, and items that will not be adversely affected by household bleach. Clean carpeting with a good carpet cleaner and steam. I had other cats at the time I lost my baby boy and they have been fine. Just because a cat gets sick froma corona virus doesn't mean they will get FIP. If the cat has a healthy immune system, odds are that he will fight off the corona virus. It usually mutates in very young, very old or sick cats.
My condolences to you.
