Low cost spay programs.

JaimeMarie Aug 11, 2003 09:20 PM

Does any one know a of any low cost spay programs in Maine (we are in the Sebago Lake area)? My student's cat had 4 kittens. All of them are female. They are going to keep 3 of them and the mother of course. So I want to find a program that will spay them, but that doesn't cost a lot of money. I am also, going to try to convince the owner of Gabby's mother to get Gabby's mother spayed.

Thanks,
Jaime

I don't know of one in Maine but if you call your local animal shelter or Humane Society they should be able to tell you.

Jaime, you can call 1-800-SPAYUSA and they will give you a list of vets in your area or you can call your local shelter or humane association. They all should have resources to low-cost spay/neuters.

Keep calling, Jaime. Most of the time, the humane societies are backlogged with calls and sometimes take a week to get back to people. Sad, but true. Sometimes you get lucky and catch a person on the other end of the line. You might try calling your local vets to see if they work with any particular organization for low cost spay/neuter. Try 1-800-Spay-USA for a low cost voucher at a local vet. The spay itself is very low cost, but the vets still want the entire set of shots prior, so while still cheap, it can still add up.

Hello,
We have an exceptionally beautiful Ragdoll kitten, Shasta is his name. I have an appt. to have him neutered on Sept. 2nd. Normally, this is not an issue. We've had serval cats "fixed" without thinking twice about the proceedure. However, when our last Ragdoll became sick, and we knew he would not recover we wished we had one of his kittens. Now, with his replacement in our house...we want insurance. Not only that, but we will be able to place the kittens if we acquire a female and breed Shasta with her.
What is an unneutered tom cat like? Shasta is a house cat and only goes outside under supervision. Also...should we wait to have him neutered at 8 months like a book says...or 4 months like
our vet says...if we do go that route.

Speaking from experience, an unneutered male cat is no fun. Once they start spraying...and that can start from the age of about 4-5 months...it is extremely difficult to get them to stop. And it's not an easy scent to get out of your house. Plus, unneutered male cats will fight very aggressively with other cats over the rights to a female in heat which they can smell from quite a distance away. He will try to get out of the house at every opportunity and probably howl if he catches wind of a female in heat. I would spay at 4 mos...we do early spay/neuters through our rescue organization and the cats do wonderfully.

An unneutered tom is a pain in the neck. Trust me, been there done that. He will run from window to window..calling at the top of his lungs..MEROWWWWWW.. in cat that translates to "girls, here I am. oh girls??" He will also spray foul smelling urine on anything he can get too. He thinks it smells wonderful so he does a lot of it. To people it stinks to high heaven and so does the urine he puts in the litterbox. He also may become territorial and aggressive with other cats in the house, he wants all the girls for himself, just in case one should show up for him AND if their are females in the area, they may suddenly camp out on your doorstep in hopes that he comes out. If the Vet wants to neuter him now, go ahead and do it. My Vet does it at 6 months or 6 pounds whichever comes first. Good luck with your decision.
