Please help Peanut

schultzie72 Aug 15, 2003 12:56 PM

I have recently had my 3 year old cat tested for FelV and he has tested positive on the Elisa test twice. I just had the IFA test done and it came back today as "positive". He is now symptomatic. He was so stressed when I brought him to the Vets he is just not snapping out of it, he is sleeping alot and not getting up much he has been running a fever. Most of the other blood work was fine (it did show that he was anemic) but the results have improved since the first test. I am feeding him raw meats, giving him vitamins, nutrical and antibiotics. I love my cat so much and I am getting very confused on the treatments medically and hollisticly. Everything that I read says something different. Baypamun sounds like it may workbut how do you get it. Then all of the different herbal remedies how do you know you are choosing the right one. If anyone one has any info on treatments that really work I would be so greatful, I just can not lose my baby boy.

Have you taken Peanut to a holistic vet, or is there one near you that you can go to? Is there a veterinary college in your area? Sometimes these places are on the cutting edge of medicine and can help with the latest treatments.

I wish I knew more that could help you.

I'm so sorry Peanut had to get this awful disease! We have several FeLV+ cats that we have taken in. The most important thing to get your kitty started on is Interferon. Get this from your Vet. Interferon is a must. And it needs to be started right now. Other than that the vitamins, nutrical and antibiotic is also on the right track.

Secondly is to keep a close eye on that anemia. I can't stress enough how important that is. Anemia is the #1 killer of FeLV cats. If the anemia becomes worse again I suggest you immediately do a complete CBC to find out if it's regenerative or non-regenerative anemia. Nothing can be done for Non-regenerative anemia.

Our cats have had good luck simply using Interferon, Pet Tinic, and Coenzyme q10. Others also use Lysine, Ester-C and Transfer Factor. A few also have used Dimethylglycine, but I'm not sure how well that works, since I've never tried it.

Also just be careful with the raw meat. FeLV kitties have a hard time fighting off E-coli. So just be cautious.

Good luck with Peanut! We've lost a few cats to FeLV but most of them are doing great. Just keep them on a good healthy diet and keep the stress down. And treat the symptoms as they come.

What I forgot to add about non-regenerative anemia is, that even though at this time there isn't a cure, they have been working on it. As far as I know I don't think any meds have officially been released for cats yet, but it is always possible. So if you run into this type of anemia, do a search for feline erythropoietin. I believe they have tried human erythropoietin on cats before, which seems to have helped but then the cats appeared to develop antibodies against it.
