How much?

coneycritters Aug 23, 2003 02:40 AM

I've been feeding Annabel canned food lately (9 Lives and Frisky's). We also have a dish of dry Nutro out, but she won't touch it, so I suppose it's immaterial. I'm wondering how much she should eat of this and in how many feedings throughout the day. I've been feeding her 4 times per day, because she won't eat a whole lot in one sitting generally and I don't want to leave the wet food sitting out too long. I'm feeding her about 2/3 of a 6 ounce can per feeding, so she's eating 2 1/2 to 3 cans per day total. She is currently about 4 1/2 lbs and almost 4 months old. She is putting on alot of size since we switched to this from the dry Nutro. She is growing like a weed now, but not fat at all. Does this sound about right? I'm wondering if she's getting enough / too much and if I'm feeding her too many times per day. How long can a dish of canned food sit out before it should be tossed?-- Jennifer

That sounds like quite a bit of canned food to me. I used to feed mine 1/2 can in the am and 1/2 can in the pm with dry food remaining out all the time. Unless those cans are the little ones like Fancy Feast, I think she is getting a bit much. I could be wrong though. I might try a different dry if she doesn't like the Nutro. Have you aske dyour vet how much to feed? Mine always told me that the amounts suggested on the bags and cans were too much and that's why so many cats become overweight. Now that I have 8 adult cats, I divide 2 cans between all 8 of them once a day for dinner and they get small portions of dry throughout the day. All of them could still stand to lose a pound or two.

Well, at time of our last appointment, she was still eating the dry Nutro almost exclusvely, so I don't know what she will say about amounts of canned. We have an appointment on Saturday, so we can ask then. Like I said, she doesn't eat the dry at all now, so it's really just the canned with the dry sitting out for no reason lol. We are going to pick up some Purina Kitten Chow on Friday, so we'll see how that goes. We originally started feeding her canned and are now, because she's teething and the dry really hurts her mouth. Se won't eat the crunchy treats she used to love either. I'm pretty sure we're going to keep her on canned indefinatly though, as she and we like it lot better, and her growth seems much better now. Yeah, they are the big cans, but from most of what I've heard this is about the right amount of food, but I'm not sure. Since I brush her teeth ever day, I'm not too concerned about her teeth and like I said, she is not getting at all fat, though she is nearly as big as her mother now (wow!). I'll let you know what the vet has to say! Thanks!-- Jennifer
