Unhealthy animals and conditions in local pet stores, WHAT TO DO?

anyone05 Oct 13, 2003 09:34 PM

hello,

i live in north carolina, and there are three pet stores in the local area. All of them seem to not have any understanding or common sense when it comes to providing the correct or even the most basic care for any type of herptiles. I have never purchased an animal from these local pet stores but i have purchased crickets, and every time i step foot in each pet store it makes me sick. I was wondering if there was anything i could do within the city, county, or state that would help stop or correct the mistreatment of these animals.

I live in fayetteville, NC., the county is cumberland county if this would be of any help.

thank you all.

Jorge

Are these "mom-and-pop" stores or national chains?

If they have a landlord, like a strip mall, you can complain to the landlord. THe Snake rescue got the puppymill chain kicked out of the mall after they sold burmese pythons to people wanting a snake no longer than 5 feet.

In NC it is a difficult problem. Reptiles are NOT companion animals in NC as in VA where they are included under cruelty laws. Reptiles are not included under the Animal Welfare Act.

If this store has a landlord or mall, complain to them. Maybe the local Humane Society can keep care sheets, etc. A letter to the editor about proper care may help also.

Try to get a legislator to work with you to include reptiles under pets so that they will be included under cruelty laws.

This weekend, I emailed a written complaint to the local SPCA for their files and they forwarded it to Animal Control for followup.

The link provided & its internal links should help get the "ball rolling" & hopefully the outcome will be to the benefit of the herps.
