14.5 year old cat, weight loss

caswarnock Dec 23, 2003 02:09 AM

Hi all, I am new to this site. I have two older cats. The oldest is 14.5 years and he is starting to really lose weight. I know he has bad eyes and pretty sure he has arthritis and from reading a few of your posts (the night howling), I think he is losing his hearing too. I know his teeth are in bad shape, but I can't help him regrow them now. (Many an early years of outdoors hunting. He has been an exclusive indoor cat for a long time now. He always sleeps with me, usually above my head, but now he is staying under the covers. My guess is to keep his little body warm. I have tried to suppliment his diet with wet food to help put some weight on him, but all he does is drink the liquid. He still eats some of his regular food, but I need some advice on how to put weight back on this guy. Thank you so much for any help you can offer. I just love him so much and want to make him feel better.

The best thing you could do for this kitty is to get him a vet exam with a full blood work up! Some of his teeth may have to be removed, but this doesn't slow most cats down. In fact they eat BETTER once they are out of pain from dental problems.

There are other senior problems like kidney/liver disease that can cause weight loss, but which can be controlled after being diagnosed. Also the cat could have diabetes.

So please, do the cat a favor and take him to the vet ASAP!

I was able to get him into the vet this afternoon and they said he has kidney failure. They gave me some diet advice and basically said to ensure he gets a low protien diet and lots of water. Guess all I can do is try to make him comfortable as long as I can. Thanks for your support.

There are many options to help a cat with kidney failure live a high-quality, longer life. You may want to check out these websites and talk to your vet:

Best wishes to you and your cat.
