My cat is suddenly eating more than usual

solmab Jan 11, 2004 10:10 AM

Hello all. It seems that now that the cold weather is here, my almost two year old cat has become ravenous in her eating. I leave a measured amount of dry food for her to eat whenever she wants and give some canned at night. When I would replenish the dry in the morning there would always be some left. Now it is finished the evening before and she acts like she is starving in the morning when I feed her. I don't want to increase the amount because she is starting to look a bit plump. Is this normal that cats eat more/have a greater appetite in the winter? Or is something else going on here. Thank you.

This is probably due to the climate change. Your cat feels a little colder than normal, but also there is the day light thing to consider. She would "know" it's winter even if you kept the heat on high. Since it takes more food to keep the body warm when it's cold she is probably instinctively eating more. I notice my cat's appetite has increased too.

You might want to give your vet a call just to be sure, but since she is gaining weight to go with the increased appetite there is probably nothing wrong. It would be worrisome if she were to be losing weight and eating more, however.
