Anyone out there?

that has special needs kitties? It's too bad this board doesn't see more traffic. For anyone who doesn't know, we have two deaf cats, one of which has healed, but troublesome injuries from past abuse as well as crossed eyes. We also have one cat that was originally asemi feral kitten, who ended up in a shelter. He seems to have some developmental issues regarding gross motor skills. Our kitten has gross motor problems too, has a lazy eye, and seems kind of mentally retarded. He didn't come from a great home either. Hope some people with disabled kitties see this! -- Jennifer

In most cases [Harlan] Ellison goes around the pit, jumps over it...or jumps right into it, on purpose, avoiding major injury either by his own talent, the grace of god, or a combination of the two.

We have a "special needs" kit also. Badger was abandoned by her mama (a very young first time mama). When she removed her from the rest of the litter we think she was accidentaly a bit rough and gave her a partial lobotomy. Badger has some coordination problems and can't follow moving objects to the right. We have to make sure she doesn't have to walk on slick floors as her right foot will slide out from under her. She also seems to have I guess a sensory overload when she gets petted. Instead of enjoying it she will bite and smack at the hand that is trying to pet her, purring madly up a storm. She wants the affection but doesn't appear to understand how to react to it normally.

We love her dearly in spite of her problems and just make allowences for them.

Good for Badger that she has people who understand her unique needs! Funny, but your description of the sensory overload reminds me of my son. He has an autism spectrum disorder and has sensory issues. Our furbabies are so messed up it seems we're constantly finding a problem we hadnt noticed before...just 2 days ago, we realized that the cat who was abused and had tail damage also has a deformity in it. I bet it's like that for you with Badger.-- Jennifer

That's soooo great that all of you are willing to take in those kitties, that many other people would not even think about adopting, or taking them in. I sadly, can't have cats due to my brother's severe allergies to them, but I've had cats in the past, and I truly believe that the world needs more people like you all!

THank you for your dedicated services to the kitty world!

Well, sometimes it seems like, what isn't wrong with Helena's tail. First of all, there's the spot right up near her body where it hangs funny, due to a break. That area used to be very tender, but not so much now, it just affects the way she carries it, and a litte bit, the way she sits. Recently, though we've come to realize due to constantly running our fingers down it to check on the injury, that several of her tail joints are fused together, and that it is very unpleasant for her to have a hand slide down the length of her tail, so to have it brushed or lifted for grooming of her back legs. At first we thought that the tail pain was all due to the injury, but now that it is healed we realized there is more to it, and you can feel the difference in her tail versus the other guys' tails. It also feels thin and puny beneith the fur and is to short. We figure that it might be due to the inbreedng.-- Jennifer

Thank you, but really it's no biggie. We love them for who they are, and just want to do our best to protect them from now on. They are all such sweet babies!-- Jennifer

I have what I consider a special kitty. Henry looks like a Himalayan, but I guess something got into the breed and the litter was given away. He was the 'runt'. As he grew, his upper 'arms' didn't. The vet called it hydracondria/something like that. Hank can't jump like a regular cat. He's low to the ground and 'slopes'. At 4 and 1/2 he just hit 8 lbs. The rest of him is in proportion. He 'stands' on his hind legs and appears to be begging because his front paws are so short. He's Mr. finicky. My husband made me kitty stairs for him so that he can get up and look out the window like the big guys!

That's so wonderful that he's gotten a loving home. It's seems like alot of people can 'look past' certain special needs but not others if it makes the cat look different. Hurray, for your hubby!! What a sweet thought.-- Jennifer
