Should we have our boy's hair cut for summer?

keely Mar 23, 2004 10:57 AM

Hi everyone:

I have a one-year-old "rescue kitty". When we got him a year ago, we had no idea he would "turn into" an Angora. He is truly beautiful with the traditional Angora hair and fluffy tail and thick mane. My question is, "Should we have his hair cut for summer?" He does not go outside, but it does tend to get warm inside even with the a/c, as we live in the desert Southwest. We've already noticed that he tends to stretch out in cool spots in the house and it's not even that hot outside yet.

Any advice would be very much appreciated. We've never had a long-haired cat before.

Thank you all,
Keely and Tony the Angora (plus a little bit of something else)

I wouldn't recommend shaving him. Maybe a trim here or there. Lot of brushing will help when he starts to shed his winter coat.

Thank you Jaime,

I have noticed a lot of hair in the comb when I use it on Tony. I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing. No haircuts for Tony, unless, like you said, just a little here and there.

We used to shave our coon cat mix. He was huge boy. The only reason we had him shaved is because he wouldn't let us brush him, and he would get really bad mats. So once a year my mom would bring him to the vet. He loved it. Would roll over onto his back and stick his legs up so they could get it all. Then he would prance all over the house. He thought he was so handsome shaved. But it took a long time for his fur to grow back in. And it was never has pretty as it was before we shaved it the first time.
