Sick Kitty....

fur_momma Apr 01, 2004 06:17 PM

I am new to being a cat cartaker (I'm not an owner, cause he owns ME!)
I have never had a cat in my life, don't know anything about cats. I adopted Astro a year ago on the 30th of March, he was 11 at the time.
I just got back from the vet. Astro is severly dehydrated (but he drinks water like it is going out of style!) and has a significant weight loss. As soon as we adopted him, we took him in for shots and a check up. He as 11.4 pounds then. Today he was 7.4 pounds. I knew he looked frail, but I thought it may be old cat syndrom.
The vet said it may be either diabetes or renal failure. I can't lose another baby. I lost my Grizzly last May, and 3 years before in May I lost my Kodiak (both dogs).
I'm so scared. I feel like I let him down. I didn't know he was sick! I asked people I know that have cats, and they said cats lose weight in the spring, and look skinny cause they lose their hair.
Please pray for my Astro.
God, don't take another from me....
Please!

I am so sorry to hear your furbaby is sick. Lots of glows and headbonks and prayers coming your way.
Not many people post in here. But lots of people post over in the general forum. So if you get lonely in here come visit in there.

Both chronic renal failure and diabetes can be controlled with proper care! Please don't blame yourself - both conditions are quite common in older cats! Adopting an older cat is a real act of mercy and you should be proud you gave this kitty a home.

Go ahead with the testing and see what the disease is and how far it has progressed. You may be surprised that it might be more managable than you think.

Best wishes to you and the kitty!

Smile, it will make them wonder what you are up to!

Thank you so much for the encouragement.

I called the vet at 7:30 this morning after a sleepless night, and they said they didn't IV him, but reather gave him fluids under the skin and this morning he is bright eyed (thank God) and he "donated" a urine sample that they are going to test this morning. So we should know something by this afternoon.

How quiet this house is without him. My puppy is lost without his buddy.

THank you for replying.

Thank you for replying.
I just hope my baby is o.k. I so worry about him stuck in a cage. He is going to be so mad when he gets home!

I just talked to the vet, and they said he is acting great. I just miss him. Poor baby. The guilt I feel for leaving him there....

Thanks again!

Any word on how he is doing this afternoon? Do they know what is wrong yet?

My sweet Astro passed away in our arms Friday night. He just crashed. They had been giving him fluid subcutaneously, but it made him dump his potasium and then he just couldn't move and he wasn't able to breathe.
We had considered getting him a kidney transplant, but he woulnd't have survived the trip there.
We had to help him go to the rainbow bridge. That is 2 beloved fur-children in less than one year.
My heart is broken.
THank you for your concern and help.
I only hope he is with my other 2 fur-babies.
I miss you, Astro!

I'm so sorry to hear about that. It's so sad that our kitties don't last as long as we do, but we love them while there here, and it sounds like your Astro had a wonderful home with great companions in his old age.

Hugs
Destany

I am so sorry about Astro. I know that you did everything you could to help him when he got so sick. Sometimes we just have to let our beloved furkids go when there is no hope. I am sure he is playing in peace at the Bridge now and knows how very much you loved him and how special he was.
